A PAP test (named for its creator, Dr. George Papanicolaou) is an effective, inexpensive test used to find cervical cancer and aid in the diagnosis of other female cancers. With a Pap test, the doctor collects a small sample of cells from the surface of a woman's cervix and spreads the cells on a slide. This slide is sent to a doctor who specializes in looking a Pap smears. The Pap test is a reliable method of detecting abnormal cells and is recommended annually for women 18 and older, as well as sexually active women.
